Clarisse Machanguana Foundation

My name is Clarisse Machanguana. Born and raised in Maputo, Mozambique, in the midst of poverty and civil war I was transfixed by the notion of protecting individual rights of women in third world countries. However, my legal studies were upended by my professional basketball career, including the WNBA. Eager to give back, I created the Clarisse Machanguana Foundation to elevate deserving youth’s lives through sports irrespective of economic status and family turmoil. I can attest to the power of sports excellence to open doors for the disadvantaged.

Youth Empowerment

& Education Through Sports

In Mozambique, only 1% of girls of the 90% enrolled in elementary school finishes college. 48% of girls under the age of 18 fall victims to child marriage, 45% are HIV positive before the age of 18.
Clarisse Machanguana Foundation Develops programs that use sports to address educational and health challenges faced by most youth.

OUR

APPROACH

Clarisse Machanguana Youth

Sports/Role models

Sport capacitates girls to get into, and stay in, secondary school. We use sport to develop fitness, self-esteem, a winning attitude and team work. Life skills learning runsalongside sport training, supporting positive decision making in life choices.

Community engagement

Using her exceptional ability as a role model, Clarisse engages and motivates young people to listen and learn. She leverages her position to bring other socially influential personalities on board, creating impactful messaging and images.

Social media/Influencers

Social media is used widely in Mozambique by youth, even in the most remote, rural areas. We have a strong social media focus to engage our audiences and make it a more powerful, learning experience.

OUR

PROGRAMS

Our life-changing, sports programs build self-esteem to create behavior change, make better life choices and stay in secondary school. As a role model, Clarisse inspires Mozambican youth to dare to dream.

Sport is an important vehicle for social and personal change. Each Jr NBA basketball program involves 30 schools, 460 girls, 10-13 years old and more than 3000 spectator students. Basketball training, with tournaments, runs alongside life skills learning.

Launched in 2016, Saber é Viver (SEV) is a national, HIV education and de-stigmatisation program to increase youth and child testing and treatment. It is designed and implemented by the foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Health and PEPFAR. So, far it has reached more than 1.8 million people.
